College Essay Help & Tutoring
College Essay Help & Tutoring After experiencing many twists and turns in my life, Iâm finally at a good spot. I know what I want to do with my life, and I know how Iâm going to get there. Learning how to wake up without my mom every morning became routine. Nothing felt right, a constant numbness to everything, and fog brain was my kryptonite. I paid attention in class, I did the work, but nothing stuck. My favorite person, the one who helped me become the man I am today, ripped away from me, leaving a giant hole in my heart and in my life. The most important factor in my transition was my momâs support. She scheduled me an appointment with a gender therapist, let me donate my female clothes, and helped build a masculine wardrobe. With her help, I went on hormones five months after coming out and got surgery a year later. I finally found myself, and my mom fought for me, her love was endless. Even though I had friends, writing, and therapy, my strongest support was my mother. I was six when I first refused/rejected girlâs clothing, eight when I only wore boyâs clothing, and fifteen when I realized why. When gifted dresses I was told to âsmile and say thank youâ while Spiderman shirts took no prompting from me, Iâd throw my arms around the giver and thank them. My whole life has been others invading my gender with their questions, tears signed by my body, and a war against my closet. Fifteen years and I finally realized why, this was a girlâs body, and I am a boy. As our Christmas Dinner squabbles suggest, seemingly insurmountable impasses can be resolved through respect and dialogue, even producing delicious results! This vocation may come in the form of political leadership that truly respects all perspectives and philosophies, or perhaps as diplomacy facilitating unity between the various nations of the world. Our familyâs ethnic diversity has meant that virtually each person adheres to a different position on the political spectrum. This has naturally triggered many discussions, ranging from the merits of European single-payer healthcare to those of Americaâs gun laws, that have often animated our meals. See, I have been blessed to be a part of what my mother calls the âmelting pot of Europe.â While I was born in England, my brothers were born in Denmark and New York. I have a Swedish sister-in-law, Italian Aunts, an English Uncle, Romanian cousins and an Italo-Danish immigrant father. Every year, that same family gathers together in New York City to celebrate Christmas. Finally, after an additional seventy-two hours, the time comes to try it. I crack the seal on the bottle, leaning over to smell what I assume will be a tangy, fruity, delicious pomegranate solution. The insufferable stench fills my nostrils and crushes my confidence. I'm momentarily taken aback, unable to understand how I went wrong when I followed the recipe perfectly. Most importantly, my family has taught me an integral life lesson. Laughter fills the show choir room as my teammates and I pass the time by telling bad jokes and breaking out in random bursts of movement. Overtired, we donât even realize weâre entering the fourth hour of rehearsal. This same sense of camaraderie follows us onstage, where we become so invested in the story we are portraying we lose track of time. I realize I choreograph not for recognition, but to help sixty of my best friends find their footing. The rollout plan for the iTaylor is to introduce it to the theater market. My goal is to use performance and storytelling to expose audiences to different cultures, religions, and points of view. Perhaps if we all learned more about each other's lifestyles, the world would be more empathetic and integrated. On the outside, I look like any smart phone, but when you open my settings and explore my abilities, you will find I have many unique features. These exact conversations drove me to learn more about what my parents, grandparents, and other relatives were debating with a polite and considerate passion. This ongoing discourse on current events not only initiated my interests in politics and history, but also prepared me greatly for my time as a state-champion debater for Regisâs Public Forum team. I felt so stupid, I knew I was capable, I could solve a Rubikâs cube in 25 seconds and write poetry, but I felt broken. I was lost, I couldnât see myself, so stuck on my mother that I fell into an âIt will never get betterâ mindset. On August 30th, 2018 my mom passed away unexpectedly.
How To Write A College Essay, With Examples
How To Write A College Essay, With Examples My first introduction to The Book Thief came when I plucked it from the bookshelf in my dadâs officeâ"with permission, for I felt no desire to fulfill the irony of stealing a book about thievery. Fingers fumbling over the smooth cover and crisp spine, I prepared myself for a new journey. It had a distinct new-book smell, fresh and crisp and full of promise. How to arrange a massive swirl of ideas on a paper to make it look appealing and easily digestible? Without it, even the most remarkable topics and perfect grammar will not save the day. What makes all these hooks stand out is the element of curiosity that forces readers to wonder how the entire story unfolds. Templates are an excellent means of understanding what form to fill your essay with and visualizing how your ideas will be arranged on paper. Little, fifth grade me just hoped that maybe the next day in class the boy sitting next to me might profess that he loved me all along. When I finished Pride and Prejudice, I thought it would quickly be replaced by another book and my love for it left behind snug in the worn out pages of my copy. I found more happy endings after that, not all too surprising but none had the same effect as Pride and Prejudice&mash;that feeling of a book leaving its fingerprint on you. The Book Thief offered my first insight into a world painted in shades of grey, my first introduction to what would become my quest for understandingâ"of humanity, of the world around me, of myself. It inspired me as a learner and as a writer to explore and question and, above all, to define my own truth. Once you come back to it, it can be easier to see where it needs editing, what you can keep, and what just doesn't work. A powerful closing statement is just as important as a good opener. Look for a way to connect the ending of your essay to the themes you presented at the beginning. You might end by sharing something meaningful that that teacher said to you, or briefly summarizing how you grew as a person after taking their class. It's tempting to embellish or overstate what you've done when you're trying to make yourself stand apart from others. My reaction to literature was largely emotionalâ"I could sense the tones and vaguely grasp the meanings of the novels. I could not, however, decode them in a way that allowed their import to live on, linguistically, within me. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. This is the central part in which you need to explain each thesis, give examples and reflect on life experiences. At this point, each paragraph should focus on a particular idea and be organized appropriately. The Book Thief, in exploring such a profound theme, stood in a stark contrast to the mechanical nature of the public education system through which Iâve journeyed. In my prior schooling, we were taught to accept only one truth as the absolute truth. It changed my perceptions of myself and of the world around me. More pieces of the puzzle left by my forbearers, both Jewish and German, fall into place. Inside the front cover was scribbled a name, illegible. The book, or so my dad told me, had been given to him as a gift from a patient, but he had never even opened it. Instead it had been reconciled to a life on the shelf, watching the world but not participating in it. The tone of each book seemed to have a distinctive resonance; they quickened different parts of my being. I was raised on Roald Dahl, J.D. Salinger, C.S. Lewis, John Steinbeck, and J.R.R Tolkien. If you find you're repeating the same words, use it. In addition to excessive wordiness, check for unnecessary tangents. When you're drafting your essay, you may end up adding things you didn't originally plan on. Go through your essay and make sure these points serve the main purpose of your essay. After you've drafted your essay, walk away from it for a while. The Inclusion, Access, and Success and Government Relations Committees recently collaborated on a joint statement regarding important issues being debated in our nation. We encourage everyone to read this piece and get involved within the IACAC community and beyond. Don't use the same words over and over in your essay. Most word processing software has a âthesaurusâ function. They were approachable, easy enough for a child to follow, and yet monumentally more vast, multifaceted, and meaningful than they appeared to me at the time. Even so, from a young age, I could tell a good book from a bad one. It wasnât until my teenage years, however, that I could tell you what made these books good, or express what they meant in terms of almost anything but plot.
How To Write A Us College Admissions Essay
How To Write A Us College Admissions Essay While essays donât weigh as much as grades or course selection, if you are applying test-optional or to a smaller school, more attention will be given to this section of the application. At almost all selective colleges however, every college essay will be read by multiple people. Review your essay to make sure that youâre keeping the tone informative and that youâre still on topic. (Brag while answering the essay prompt; donât just mention random, unrelated but impressive facts about yourself!)You can use this brag sheet where you can brainstorm your accomplishments. While the worksheet is geared toward requesting letters of recommendation, you can still use it to write out your hobbies, interests, college list, and strengths to help you answer your scholarship essay prompt. Whether youâre prepared or not, there comes a time when every student is faced with writing their first college essay. Even if youâre a natural writer, writing a college essay is still a daunting task. Hereâs a method for tackling the process and a few examples to inspire you. Some campuses have a pool of reviewers, while others are more specific. For a small college, there is a chance that you essay will only be read by a couple of individuals, but for a larger school it can make its way through several hands before being put down. A lot of it depends upon the selectivity of the school. It is always worth an applicantâs while to write as strong an essay as possible, but its role in the process is a variable one. The second type of admission letter is sent by students to prospective universities or colleges, such as nursing school or graduate school. The student must convey why they want to attend and what makes them suitable for admission. How much weight a college puts on that portion of the application may differ. Just how many readers digest your words can vary as well. Still, donât waste the opportunity to put another dimension on your application file. Usually one to two admissions officers read an essay. Some colleges will choose only to look at your GPA, Course Rigor and SAT/ACT scores. If you GPA and Test Scores are high enough, they may not feel that and essay is necessary. The role of the essay varies greatly from school to school. You could open with an anecdote or an interesting story that will show some of the best parts of your personality and character, offering an insight that will help the admission officers get to know who you are. A college application essay is usually around 500 words, and those words can mean the difference between acceptance and rejection. You will spend many days researching and crafting your essay, but admissions officers will only have a few minutes to actually read it, so you need to get their attention. It is important for them to sell themselves not just by listing their qualifications and grades, but by passionately sharing their long-term goals, and efforts so far to achieve them. Your studentsâ college essay is their opportunity to reveal their best qualities and to show an admission committee what makes them stand out from other applicants. Work with your students to help them with this important piece of their application. If a student is on the fence, not an early admit or deny, essays will probably be read multiple times by multiple people while an applicant is being discussed. You can be certain that you did not spend all that time crafting the perfect essay in vain. Spend some time figuring out how the essay question relates to your personal qualities and then write from a specific angle. While you research your application essay, you will be encouraged to check out some examples of great essays and get inspired. While this is a great exercise, many students allow themselves to be influenced too much by the examples, and use lots of clichés in their desire to impress the admission officers. The admissions officers will only spend a brief amount of time reviewing your essay, so you need to start with a vivid paragraph that will keep them engaged. The introduction has to reveal to the reader what your essay is about and catch their attention. A college application essay is basically a glimpse into how your mind works and how you view the world. If you want your essay to be credible, you need to make sure everything you write supports that viewpoint.

How To Write The College Admissions Essay
How To Write The College Admissions Essay It was as if the world finally came to terms with your mind. Like waking up from a dream to realize a truer, better world, the Narnians were led to the truest and most awoken state. It is a simple parable that reminds of Platoâs Allegory of the Cave, where one man emerges from a lifetime of staring at shadows dancing on a cave wall to a real and vibrant and three-dimensional world. I had read Platoâs Republic, his Allegory of the Cave, and various dialogues in my sophomore year; I was surprisingly only finishing the Narnia series in my junior year. He said winning without fighting is the greatest victory. I think we canât resolve conflicts, avoid wars, or maintain stability without understanding ourselves and our neighbors. I think understanding is more important than ever, because people of almost any culture can be found in almost every country. Some of our neighbors have F1 visas and sit next to us in school. The Last Battle was the spark that gave me hope, Platoâs Allegory of the Cave gave me strength, and Platoâs Republic is what gave me the intellectual confidence in the presence of the ideal and the universal. His ability to so perfectly enunciate why we must never lose hope, and always struggle towards the ideal. The book goes surprisingly far into defining numbers, including advanced concepts such as infinitesimals and the different levels of infinity. This helped me to better understand what numbers are and that I had not appreciated all of the work that had gone into defining them for our use today. In this way they were Socrates-- and I was the student who ended up understanding more than I anticipated, or was expected to, because of the way I was carefully led by the author and his characters. There are no other works that best exemplify that power of words and ideas have had on my life and my outlook on it. C.S. Lewis himself was a big fan of Plato; his works were the key that allowed me to decipher the meaning encoded in the Plato that I had read. Some of our neighbors become citizens of our country and permanently change and enrich our national identity. Western military personnel and aid workers are side-by-side with tribal fighters and indigenous community leaders, combating terrorism, lawlessness, and poverty. I was never able to portray the view quite as I saw it. Once Iâd calmed down a little, I decided to prioritize the readings required for the class. I downloaded the rest of the course selections and printed them out. In the weeks leading up to my departure, I trekked to the nearby field with my dog and my books, and I sat at the picnic table overlooking the woods. The next morning, when I woke up, I walked out onto the balcony of the second floor of the Murchison dormitory. I sat down at the plastic picnic table and breathed in the crisp morning air. I watched the sienna hills tinged with gold in the east as the sun slowly revealed itself. My teachers, although they tried, were unable to explain things to me and I, to be fair, was not great at listening to their explanations. The only time I loved math was sophomore year when we did proofs. They were puzzles and fascinating in a way that other math wasnât. He said only understanding yourself and your enemy guarantees victory. I dove into Aristotle and Thucydides while my dog investigated the nearby smells. Every evening, I ticked off the days on the calendar, counting down to the day I would fly from Michigan to Santa Fe. As a result, my grades suffered and Iâve spent most of my time in math class frustrated, confused, and upset. I, all artists, and those seeking some sort of universal truth, must try to achieve that purest, most visceral understanding. That idea, presented in Platoâs work, had not yet become clear to me, until I finished reading The Last Battle. We are becoming a rich gumbo, not a homogenous puree. Rowlingâs Harry Potter series was published, I was in third grade. My family bought three copies so my mom, my dad and I could all read it immediately. Rowlingâs stories about a boy growing up, having misadventures and facing his destiny enraptured me, but the real witchcraft was in her words. Eventually the couple is able to guide themselves into ever more elaborate notations as they attempt to build proofs to solidify these connected ideas about numbers.
How Many Paragraphs In An Essay?
How Many Paragraphs In An Essay? I am not simply interested in St. Johnâs; I am mesmerized by it. The thought of reading forty books in class over the school year excites me. The image of being surrounded by people similar to me thrills me. The hunter spends the rest of the story thinking through all the possible ramifications that come with choosing to exist only within a single second. He refers to this moment as ât zero,â where t is time, and the moment he is experiencing is point zero. Although staying at t zero is appealing, upon the end of the story the hunter must inevitably move through time into the next second where his fate will be decided. When my mom handed me Cosmicomicsin New York and said that I might like it, I was pretty skeptical. The knowledge that this may be in my future invigorates me. There is not one book on its own that calls to me, but knowing they are on my horizon fills me with anticipation. I can see me, a year older, sitting inside, curled up around a book and blanket. The sun has set early, so a lamp is on, shining warm light onto the pages. A roommate is across from me reading the same book, and every couple minutes we stop to comment. I stayed up late the night before reading a different book, and though we have only just started reading this one, we are both hooked. We are discovering adventure, one page at a time. Furthermore, they know this largely happens in discussions about Great Books around small tables. Having tasted this kind of discussion in high school, I will seek it out the rest of my life. This perspective is increasingly, and tragically, rare in a world obsessed with information and afraid of questions. Intellectual complacency even pervades higher education where students are more concerned with marketing themselves and acquiring credentials than pursuing truth and acquiring wisdom. Beliefs are too often determined by trends and political bias, because in the social media age, how we are perceived matters more to us than what we actually think. I want to go to St. Johnâs because the whole methodology is in such a way that I can begin to love math. Every tutorial and seminar is taught with this same level of depth and understanding. At St. Johnâs math has life, beauty, purpose and in college I donât want to wonder why the quadratic formula is written the way it is, I want to know. There have been so many times in high school where weâve been assigned some math problem for homework and I would just be completely confused by it. This is my favorite quotation from my favorite book, The Underdogs by Mariano Azuela. I read this book for the first time in eighth grade while exploring the causes and consequences of the Mexican revolution. I am reluctant to fall in love with book someone recommends. But once I started it, I realized that I couldnât help falling for it. Each one starts with a quote, which Calvino uses to explain and explore complex scientific theories. For example, he takes the reader through the creation of the universe, mitosis and meiosis, theories about space and time, dinosaurs, the moon, and many more. The complex tapestries he weaves are hauntingly beautiful, sharing only a common narrator, the ageless Qfwfq, who relays each story as though having witnessed it. For me, that answer doesnât help, but only leaves me more confused and mystified by math. I want all the above because ignorance is a killer, and willful ignorance is the biggest killer we face as a nation. Unhealthy diets and alcohol-fueled accidents are leading causes of death. Every part of the model and curriculum at St. Johnâs encourages an honest pursuit of truth, but the classroom discussions most of all. The liturgy of every class-- beginning with a single question and every individual being addressed as Mr. or Ms.-- reflects a zealous love of truth. In the classroom, ideas and individuals are honored accordingly. Astoundingly, Johnnies spend every class with individuals who probably have entirely different career goals. In their honest pursuit of truth, they recognize that preparing for a career and to be fully human should be one and the same. He has a 50/50 chance of killing the lion or being killed by the lion. The hunter then considers the possibility of remaining frozen in time in this moment of uncertainty forever, where every possible outcome could still happen, but hasnât happened yet.

College Essay Mistakes
College Essay Mistakes I began wandering around campus with no company except my thoughts. Occasionally, Zora, my English teacherâs dog, would tag along and weâd walk for miles in each other's silent company. Other times, I found myself pruning the orchard, feeding the schoolâs wood furnaces, or my new favorite activity, splitting wood. Throughout those days, I created a new-found sense of home in my head. In the years that followed, this experience and my regular visits to my allergy specialist inspired me to become an allergy specialist. As I learned more about the medical world, I became more fascinated with the bodyâs immune responses, specifically, how a body reacts to allergens. This past summer, I took a month-long course on human immunology at Stanford University. Even though I was probably only ten at the time, I wanted to find a way to help kids like me. I wanted to find a solution so that nobody would have to feel the way I did; nobody deserved to feel that pain, fear, and resentment. It became clear that the English language, one I took for granted, is the central feature that brings groups together. 25 therapy sessions, over 40 poems, not a single one didnât mention my mom. I shared my writing at open mics, with friends, and I cried every time. We collided and I banana-peeled, my head taking the brunt of the impact. Stubborn as I was, even with a concussion, I wanted to remain in class and do everything my peers did, but my healing brain protested. My teachers didnât quite know what to do with me, so, no longer confined to a classroom if I didnât want to be, I was in limbo. I embraced the pain, the hurt, and eventually, it became the norm. Similarly, as president of the International Students Club, I invited my teammates to have meetings with me at the cafe. Coordinating the schedule with other members in Blue House has become a frequent event. The experience implanted a âcookieâ in me, filling me with a desire to learn about different cultures. I brought this desire home to a volunteer position at a local program for immigrant children. I helped the kids make presentations about their places of origin, including Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. The rollout plan for the iTaylor is to introduce it to the theater market. My goal is to use performance and storytelling to expose audiences to different cultures, religions, and points of view. Perhaps if we all learned more about each other's lifestyles, the world would be more empathetic and integrated. Two summers ago, I travelled to Ecuador to live with a friendâs family and teach Spanish theater to third graders. Consuming several cups of coffee, my team and I have planned Lunar New Year events, field trip to the Golden Gate Bridge, and Chinese lunch in school to help international students feel more at home. Straightening my back and bracing my shoulders, I stood up behind the conference table and expressed my creative ideas passionately. After each meeting, we shared buttermilk coffee-cake. That night, the glow-in-the-dark ball skittered across the ice. My opponent and I, brooms in hand, charged forward. I realize I choreograph not for recognition, but to help sixty of my best friends find their footing. I hold onto my time as dearly as my Scottish granny holds onto her money. Iâm careful about how I spend it and fearful of wasting it. However, there are moments where the seconds stand still.
